Courtesy implies politeness, respect or regard. In traditional African setting, a compound comprises of two or four nuclear family groups, with a head. The head mediates in conflict among members, which might not have been resolved  by individual heads of the nuclear family. Also there are heads of villages and towns. Such heads include the Oba in Yorubaland, Obi in Igboland and Emir in Hausa/Fulani land. Formerly, the heads were responsible for the collection of taxes, general administration and governance. But presently their roles are advisory.
